In exploring and excavating the 200 year old Williamson Tunnels, we educate the public about eccentric philanthropist Joseph Williamson whilst preserving his unique labyrinth of tunnels for public access and enjoyment.

"We need volunteers to help excavate the tunnels and to assist in the Reception, Charity shop & Cafe areas. We also need volunteers as Tour Guides to lead people through the tunnels whilst presenting historical information. "

In the last nine years, we have opened the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre, allowing members of the public to see for the first time the hidden heritage beneath their feet. We have an ongoing programme of exploration and excavation to further discover, preserve and present previously lost tunnels. Our team of local volunteers have removed over 2000 tonnes of backfill by hand to reveal 'hidden' tunnels and we are hoping to open more for the enjoyment and education of the public
How does your charity/project support the local community?
A dedicated and enthusiastic team of local volunteers of all ages and abilities are helping to restore and preserve a fascinating part of Livepool's heritage. We have also provided placements for schemes such as Future Jobs Fund and Action 4 Employment in helping young people enhance their employability. And we offer engaging workshops for schools to explore their local history and we provide an unique space for community projects and events.
What do you plan to use the CommunityForce award for?
The Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre is on the verge of its most exciting discovery. Hidden for over a century, the Triple Decker tunnel has been unearthed in recent years and an award would make a significant contribution in renewing and restoring access into this tunnel for the public and to expand and enhance the overall tour experience.
