Sculpture Cymru
Castle : Sculptural Responses An open air festival of sculpture in Kidwelly Town and Castle. Artists are being commissiond to make sculpture that responds to the history, culture and environment of the area. It will last from June - Sept 2012.
What does your charity/project do?
We organise exhibitions, residencies, workshops, conferences and commissions for artists. In many instances, this involves working with local residents, school children and students helping them to create their own artwork, understand the work of sculptors, appreciate and value their own surroundings and environment. This Project has been developed by Sculpture Cymru at the request of Kidwelly Residents.
How does your charity/project support the local community?
This Project developed from one that Sculpture Cymru was asked to organise in Kidwelly as part of a Residential Conference in 2010 attended by some 300 people. Seeing how it encouraged people to engage with and appreciate their environment, Kidwelly Town Council, Cadw and representatives of other local bodies have asked us to develop a similar project in 2012, but one which involves the local Community to a much greater extent.
What do you plan to use the CommunityForce award for?
To fund Community-based work as an integral part of the larger Project:- Artists will spend a week with local school children helping them to create sculpture that responds to the history of their Town and Castle, with an exhibition being mounted during the Summer. A series of 'Have A Go Workshops' in the Castle, lead by artists, will encourage local residents and visitors make their own sculpture in wood and stone thereby giving them a greater understanding of their historical surroundings.
