Blue Elephant Theatre Ltd
We are a small ground roots theatre providing vital outreach arts education and workshops to participants aged 8 to 80 who would not normally have access to the arts in the area of Southwark.
What does your charity/project do?
We have been delivering regular drama, dance and singing workshops in 5 local primary schools in the last year leading to performances at our theatre. We run a Youth Theatre that is free for Southwark participants as well as a street dance group. Our Forum Theatre project has been touring secondary schools in Southwark with professional actors. For the community we have recently provided 2 Summer Schools as well as 2 intergenerational community plays where local residents created their own shows
How does your charity/project support the local community?
The focus of our work is to tackle all forms of social exclusion in our area by engaging individuals through the arts. Our social inclusion agenda ensures that: we are committed to ensuring access to the arts for groups of individuals who would not normally be able to access such activities for social, economic or other reasons. Many of our projects target people from refugee, asylum and migrant communities as well as children in care, young carers and young people at the risk of offending.
What do you plan to use the CommunityForce award for?
We would expand on our community work that is intergenerational and involves families and residents working together on creative exciting projects. Over the last year this work has expanded and there is much interest. We have faciliated a writing course for disabled people but would like to do more with this as well as make the provision we offer to adults in the area more regular and involve more aspects of the arts. For example we have done a community play but would love to now do an opera.
