The Lesbian & Gay Foundation
Homophobic bullying is still endemic in UK schools, with research highlighting that two thirds of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people report being bullied in school; our project addresses this through the provision of ‘Safer Schools packs’.

The LGF is a community based charity located in Manchester, providing a range of services to around 40,000 LGB people each year. We provide a range of activities and support for people such support groups, face-to-face counselling, anti-homophobia projects in schools, information guides and resources, a Helpline, advice surgeries, research projects and policy campaigning. We provide more direct services and resources to more LGB people than any other organisation of our kind in the UK.
How does your charity/project support the local community?
We believe that young people need to be the driving force behind shaping communities which accept and celebrate diversity. Our ‘Safer Schools Packs’ support schools to take action against homophobia as we believe all students have the right to learn in a safe environment and reach their full potential. Schools are an integral part of communities and the values upheld within them can massively influence those of the wider community. Visit www.lgf.org.uk/a-fathers-story to find out more.
What do you plan to use the CommunityForce award for?
If successful we would be able to provide 300 packs to schools across Manchester, which include; • PowerPoint presentation for use in assemblies. • Lesson plans. • An anti-homophobia DVD (staring Antony Cotton and featuring Sir Ian McKellen). • Support for teachers (including information on legislation and practical advice). • Posters, stickers and balloons. Along with sending out the packs, we would follow up with schools after 6 weeks to get feedback on the difference they are making.
