The Erddig Walkway Project (Wrexham)
The Erddig Walkway Project aims to improve an open greenspace in the deprived Hightown area of Wrexham. Physical improvements including raised planters, flower beds, seating and engagement with local schools and residents through outdoor activities.
What does your charity/project do?
Groundwork help people make changes in order to create better neighbourhoods, to build skills and job prospects and to live and work in a greener way. We operate across North Wales on a range of environmental projects each year. We focus our activity on disadvantaged communities where we can make most difference. We work with schools, community groups and others who need support in improving their sites for both people and wildlife. The Erddig Walkway Project was brought to us by local residents.
How does your charity/project support the local community?
The Erddig Walkway Project has been devised by the local Enviromental Action Group, made up of residents. We intend to support this group by making their vision a reality not only by improving their local greenspace but in raising awareness of environmental issues with other locals whilst also improving access to local green space for those who are less able. This site will have a life beyond the initial project as the local group takes it forward. Activities and events will be open to all.
What do you plan to use the CommunityForce award for?
This would be used to pay for our own charities' staff time in delivering all aspects of the Erddig Walkway Project. Including running practical work sessions with the local community (open to all), school sessions with local children, working alongside the Environment Group (local residents) to come up with a long term management plan for the site and running an Open Day event to celebrate the work once complete. Funds required to pay for materials are being sourced elsewhere.
