SWNotts Explorers provide activities and training for young people from 14 to 18 years. We are the fourth section of the Scout association and operate in an area bounded by the River Trent, River Erewash, and the City of Nottingham.

What does your charity/project do?

SWNotts Explorers support 7 units based in Beeston, Rylands, Bramcote, Stapleford, Chilwell, Toton and a Young Leaders Unit for Explorers who want to help at younger sections (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts). Explorers have taken part in the District Centenary Camp, developed Winter Camping techniques, take part in international friendship regular Boating and traditional Scouting activities. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a key part of the programming, which is planned by the Explorers themselves.

How does your charity/project support the local community?

The Explorers provide interestingand challenging activities for young people from all areas of our community. There are about 60 Explorers now and we would like to recruit more young people to join the adventure. The training programme aims to develop all aspects of their character to take a useful place in society. They learn about teamwork, leadership, social responsibilty, environmental and global issues. This is done within a safe framework which supports independence and initiative.

What do you plan to use the CommunityForce award for?

The Explorers need more camping equipment, not only for large camps which require mass catering but also for Expeditions which involve lightweight camping. The funds would buy new lightweight tents, and also tables and seats for catering and equipment such as lighting and cookers. A useful addition would be a trailer for transport.
