Treetops Hospice

Winner

Our Hospice at Home service provides end of life care for terminally ill adults in their homes, as well as providing support and respite care for their families and carers. This award would allow us to provide 180 hours of vital care.

What does your charity/project do?

Treetops Hospice provides palliative care services to adults living in southern Derbyshire and the Nottinghamshire borders who are suffering from life-limiting conditions, their families and significant carers. Hospice at Home is our largest service and last year we provided more than 21,000 hours of end of life care in patients’ homes. There is an increasing demand for this type of care and we are looking to develop this service as part of the Government’s end of life care strategy.

How does your charity/project support the local community?

Treetops Hospice is a truly local charity. We offer a 24/7 care service for local families in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire who are having to cope with the most difficult of situations. Our team of nurses offer personal and emotional care, symptom control expertise, rapid response service and respite for carers. Ultimately, we give people the choice of dying at home. Last year, of the 62% of our patients who identified their preferred place of death, 82% achieved their wish.

What do you plan to use the CommunityForce award for?

This award would allow us to continue to give local people the freedom to choose where they are cared for, and ultimately where they die. £6,000 would pay for 180 hours of Hospice at Home care. This is the equivalent of providing a nurse overnight for 20 patients, giving their spouse or carer the opportunity to get a full night’s sleep and a much needed break.
