Abbey Community Association Ltd
A seasonal programme of activities for older (60+) isolated and vulnerable SW1 residents, many of whom suffer from high levels of deprivation in terms of low income, ill health, poor confidence/motivation and low uptake of other more formal services.
What does your charity/project do?
The Abbey runs a busy, vibrant community centre in SW1. Established in 1948 the Charity has a long term commitment to running activities which seek to improve quality of life within the local community. Activities are run by, and for, the community with a high level of user involvement; including health, exercise, learning and leisure related sessions. Many users are older and less able although activities are also run for families and children. In 2010/11 >24000 participants used the centre!
How does your charity/project support the local community?
Our vision is to be the healthy, happy heart of SW1. Working with the community we offer diverse services to promote quality of life and independent living. Many of our services are user led, and all are identified by the community as needed. Activities are reflective of the diverse local community; including an Arabic supplementary school, Eastern European Folk dancing, Bingo and IT for older people. In addition we work with statutory providers, facilitating consultation/feedback with users.
What do you plan to use the CommunityForce award for?
The £6000 would be used to fund 3 major events to improve confidence, motivation, social networking and leisure opportunities for over 300 older, and disadvantaged SW1 residents. The funds would be spent on; - An Autumn sing-along with refreshments and entertainment. - A Christmas lunch with entertainment and - A Spring tea dance with music and refreshments. All the events would be in our welcoming and accessible community centre, with transport, supported by professional staff and volunteers
